Patagonian Cavy (Maras)

South-central South America

These short tailed , rough- haired rodents strongly resemble large, long legged rabbits. Also called Maras, they may reach weights of 20-30 lbs. they are herbivores, feeding on plant material found in the dry South American grasslands where they live. Maras are active during the day and shelter in burrows of their own construction or those abandoned by  other animals.

Although accomplished runners and jumpers, cavies most commonly travel by means of strotting bouncing on all four legs at once. in this manner, they can reach heights of over 6ft and speed up to 19 mph
